Parents Back MAHA Food Measures, KFF Finds

The findings point to the Dietary Guidelines update as the next lever for embedding the food agenda in federal programs.

Overview

  • A Washington Post/KFF poll released Wednesday reports at least eight in ten parents support stronger rules on artificial additives, highly processed foods, and added sugars.
  • Support spans parties, with 90% of Republican parents, 85% of Democrats, and 83% of independents favoring tighter oversight of dyes and chemical additives.
  • Self-identified MAGA Republicans show especially high backing for MAHA-style steps, including 92% for regulating artificial additives, 87% for highly processed foods, and 85% for sugar.
  • Overall enthusiasm for the MAHA brand name is lower, with roughly four in ten parents saying they support the movement, including 62% of Republicans, 34% of independents, and 17% of Democrats.
  • Federal momentum continues after the FDA moved to phase out petroleum-based food dyes this spring and major companies began reformulating, with Walmart targeting removal of synthetic dyes from private-label foods by January 2027.
