Parents Arrested After West Allis 4-Year-Old’s Death Ruled Homicide

Prosecutors now review a case that police say includes bruising inconsistent with a fall.

Overview

  • West Allis police arrested the boy’s parents — a 21-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman — and said they are not seeking additional suspects.
  • Emergency dispatch received a call around 8 a.m. Oct. 18, and the mother stopped near the fire station at 108th Street and Greenfield Avenue for CPR instructions.
  • The child was taken to Children’s Hospital and pronounced dead, and the medical examiner preliminarily ruled the death a homicide and identified the boy as Dante Campbell.
  • Search warrants say the father reported the child was stiff and smelled bad and claimed a stair fall, while photographs documented bruises on all sides of the body inconsistent with that explanation.
  • Records state the parents left the child’s twin with a friend before seeking help, and investigators reported finding a gray child’s shirt with apparent bodily fluids in a vehicle; the case has been sent to the Milwaukee County district attorney for charging review.
