Paralympic Handbike Champion Paolo Cecchetto Hospitalized After Training Crash

Cecchetto is in stable condition at Sant'Anna hospital with a suspected tibia fracture following the SUV’s abrupt turn into his path.

Overview

  • On August 10 at around noon, Cecchetto was struck during a training run on provincial road 23 near Appiano Gentile when an SUV turned into a gas station entrance.
  • Early reconstructions indicate the SUV veered sharply into the station entrance without warning before colliding with the athlete.
  • Emergency teams arrived within minutes and transported Cecchetto in code yellow to Sant’Anna hospital in Como.
  • One rescuer required treatment for a heat-related medical issue during the response and was also taken to the emergency department.
  • Paraplegic since a motorcycle accident at age 22, Cecchetto went on to win handbike gold at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
