Paraguay Will Keep ‘El Monstruo’ Phones as Extradition Requests Multiply

Paraguay will keep the seized phones to send only extracted data to Peru.

Overview

  • Erick Moreno Hernández, alleged leader of Los Injertos del Cono Norte, remains under preventive detention in the Martín Mendoza maximum-security prison in Emboscada following his capture in San Lorenzo.
  • Paraguayan authorities plan to extract data from four seized phones in Asunción and transmit only the results to Lima, according to ABC Paraguay journalist Iván Leguizamón.
  • Moreno rejected a simplified extradition and claims severe asthma with only one healthy lung, asserting he could be killed if returned to Peru.
  • Paraguay has received extradition requests from Peru and other countries including the United States, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil.
  • A retired Peruvian police commander said investigators identified 13 to 15 Peruvian officers who supported Moreno, with several already cited in prosecutorial case files.
