Para-Swimmer Janis McDavid Conquers Starnberger See in 1:31

His crossing fuels a campaign for every child to have access to swimming lessons.

Overview

  • On July 20, 2025, McDavid, born without arms and legs, completed the 2.4 km swim across Starnberger See in 1 hour 31 minutes, beating his self-set two-hour goal.
  • He propels himself through the water using an adaptive rhythm of seven wave-like dolphin movements through his body followed by a breath.
  • McDavid overcame a childhood fear of water after a near-drowning incident and long exclusion from school swimming lessons.
  • As ambassador for Stiftung Deutschland Schwimmt, he is advocating for universal swim education for children with and without disabilities.
  • After a summer training break, he will prepare for the German short-course Para-swimming championships scheduled for November.
