Overview

  • The Papal tiara was ceremonially returned to the late Gothic statue of Saint Peter in Munich’s Church St. Peter after the election of Pope Leo XIV.
  • The tiara had been removed following the death of Pope Francis, in accordance with a long-standing ritual observed by the church.
  • City priest Daniel Lerch led a procession during which the tiara was temporarily placed before an image of the deceased pope.
  • The statue, created by Munich sculptor Erasmus Grasser (c. 1450–1518), is the only surviving element of the original Gothic altar incorporated into the Baroque altar built between 1730 and 1734.
  • The Church St. Peter, known locally as 'Alter Peter,' remains a key religious and cultural landmark, with its tower being one of Munich’s most popular viewpoints.
