Pantograph Failure Ignites DART Train Fire, Halting Downtown Service

  • At about 3:38 p.m. Wednesday, Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were dispatched to a downtown tunnel near Ross Avenue and North Central Expressway after a train’s pantograph equipment malfunctioned and ignited a fire.
  • Six passengers were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and nine others received on-scene treatment as 40 people were evacuated from the train and surrounding tunnel area.
  • DART suspended all rail service through downtown and launched shuttle bus operations at stations such as Victory, West End and Pearl/Arts District to mitigate commuter delays.
  • Eyewitness video and Sky 4 images showed flames and thick smoke rising from the train’s roof before firefighters extinguished the blaze within minutes.
  • The transit agency has initiated a formal probe into the equipment failure that sparked the fire to prevent similar incidents.
