Pantón Wildfire Triggers Evacuations, Jumps River Cabe Into Sober

Investigators are probing a possible rail-side ignition under difficult firefighting conditions.

Overview

  • Regional authorities estimated about 700 hectares burned by Friday evening, with the fire still active in the Ribeira Sacra.
  • The blaze crossed the Cabe and led to evacuations in five villages — three in Pantón and two in Sober — with 47 residents moved from three Pantón hamlets, according to 112 Galicia.
  • Train service between Ourense and Lugo remains suspended and the LU-P-4103 provincial road faced closures because of flames and smoke.
  • The UME deployed from León to reinforce regional crews as smoke, thermal inversion and steep terrain limited air support before flights resumed in the afternoon.
  • Guardia Civil and the Policía Autonómica are investigating the origin after the fire started near the railway, with no cause confirmed.
