Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Dies at 89 as Varanasi Bids Farewell With State Honours

A towering voice of the Banaras gharana, the Padma Vibhushan laureate was revered for Purab Ang thumri, khayal, dadra, bhajan.

  • The 89-year-old died around 4 a.m. on October 2 at his daughter's home in Mirzapur after a prolonged illness, his family said.
  • He had recently spent about 17–18 days at BHU’s Sir Sunder Lal Hospital for age-related complications, with reports noting chest infection and anaemia.
  • His remains were taken to Varanasi on October 2, and he was cremated at Manikarnika Ghat with a guard of honour.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi led tributes, joined by President Droupadi Murmu, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and leading musicians.
  • An exponent of the Banaras gharana and Purab Ang thumri, he received the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2020; survivors include his son Ramkumar Mishra and three daughters.
