Panchkula Police Bust WPL Betting Racket, Seven Sent to Judicial Custody

Investigators are mining seized electronics to map the racket’s money trail.

  • A detective team raided a rented Sector 21 bungalow late on January 12 after a tip-off and caught suspects taking bets on the UP vs Bengaluru WPL match.
  • Officers seized about ₹7 lakh in cash plus four laptops, 46 mobile phones, two computer monitors, three tablets, and a sound recorder from the site.
  • The accused were identified as Pawan Mahajan, Amit Bhatia, Sameer Wadhwa, Ankit Aggarwal, Anil Kumar, Nipun Arora, and Anshu Sharma.
  • Police registered a case under Section 4(1) of the Gambling Act; three were first placed on one-day remand on January 13 before all seven were moved to judicial custody on January 14.
  • Senior officials said the group used modern technology to lure the public, and further arrests are possible as interrogations and forensic analysis continue.
