Overview
- India’s Income Tax Department issued final reminders to link PAN with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025, after which unlinked PANs become inoperative from January 1, 2026.
- The mandate covers PANs allotted on or before July 1, 2017, while new PAN applicants already complete Aadhaar-based verification at issuance.
- Non-compliance can block tax refunds and refund interest, trigger higher TDS/TCS, prevent TDS/TCS credits in Form 26AS, bar 15G/15H filings, and restrict common banking and investment transactions.
- Taxpayers can link and verify status on the income tax e-filing portal, including via the ‘Link Aadhaar’ quick option without logging in, with fee payment enabled through e-pay tax.
- Inoperative PANs can be reactivated in about 30 days after intimating Aadhaar and paying the fee, and data mismatches can be fixed via UIDAI, Protean (NSDL), UTIITSL, or biometric verification at authorised centres.
