PANAadhaar Linking Deadline Is Dec. 31: What Taxpayers Must Do Now

The tax department directs users to the e-filing portal for payment, linkage, status checks before cards become inoperative.

Overview

  • PANs not linked by December 31, 2025 become inoperative, halting income-tax return filing and refunds, restricting banking transactions, and triggering higher TDS/TCS rates under sections 206AA and 206CC.
  • A ₹1,000 late fee applies before linking for most users, while PANs issued after October 1, 2024 using the Aadhaar enrolment ID can link free by the deadline, according to ClearTax.
  • For PANs allotted on or before July 1, 2017, linking with Aadhaar is mandatory, with the Link Aadhaar service available to individual taxpayers on the e-filing portal.
  • To link, log in at incometax.gov.in, choose Link Aadhaar, pay via e‑Pay Tax with challan generation on the portal, then complete the request on the site; processing may take four to five working days.
  • Check status via View Link Aadhaar Status on the portal, and if data mismatches block linking, update Aadhaar on UIDAI, correct PAN via Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL, or use biometric verification at authorised PAN centers.
