Palmetto Bay Councilman Refuses to Resign After Post Mocking Charlie Kirk’s Killing

A Sept. 17 council meeting will consider his future after mounting pressure from residents and state officials.

Overview

  • Steve Cody deleted a Facebook post that called Charlie Kirk “a fitting sacrifice” to “Smith & Wesson” and later issued an apology calling the message insensitive.
  • Cody says he will not step down and intends to serve through 2028, acknowledging regret but rejecting calls for his resignation.
  • Mayor Karyn Cunningham labeled the post incompatible with public service and placed the matter on the Sept. 17 village council agenda, noting the council cannot unilaterally remove him.
  • Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and members of Congress, including Reps. Carlos Gimenez and María Elvira Salazar, urged Cody to resign as residents rallied outside Village Hall.
  • Separately from the political fallout, the Daily Mail reports a suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was taken into custody after a family tip, following earlier law-enforcement appeals for information.
