Palestinian Authorities Arrest Long-Sought Suspect in 1982 Paris Kosher Restaurant Attack

French officials say cooperation with the Palestinian Authority clears a path to a swift extradition to Paris.

Overview

  • Interpol notified France’s anti-terror prosecutor of the West Bank arrest of Hicham Harb, and President Emmanuel Macron praised the cooperation and pressed for speedy extradition.
  • Harb, 70, also known as Mahmoud Khader Abed Adra, is accused of overseeing the commando that hit Jo Goldenberg and has been wanted under a 2015 international warrant.
  • A Paris judge ordered a July trial for six suspects in the case, with two already in France, including Walid Abdulrahman Abou Zayed extradited from Norway in 2020 and Hazza Taha arrested earlier this year.
  • Prosecutors called the arrest a major procedural breakthrough as victims’ families were briefed, while defense lawyers for an indicted suspect said they will seek to reopen the investigation.
  • The 1982 attack, attributed to the Abu Nidal Organization, killed six and wounded 22 after a grenade and automatic gunfire struck the Marais district restaurant.
