Palermo Elevator Plunge Injures Nine as Prosecutor Orders Probe

Investigators are examining possible overloading following resident complaints about prior faults.

Overview

  • An elevator in a residential building on Arévalo 2700 fell from an upper floor around 1:35 a.m., leaving nine youths trapped and injured but no fatalities.
  • City firefighters, Police from Comisaría Vecinal 14B and SAME mounted a large rescue, with 11 ambulances and a triage unit, concluding operations at about 2:45 a.m.
  • Victims aged roughly 18 to 22 suffered polytrauma, including a femur and a fibula fracture, and were taken to Hospital Fernández (5), Pirovano (2) and Rivadavia (2).
  • The Unidad de Flagrancia Norte, led by prosecutor Federico Brondini, ordered a police guard and technical examinations to determine whether mechanical failure, overloading or maintenance lapses were involved.
  • Neighbors reported weeks of malfunctions and unusual noises, while the elevator company and independent experts cited overloading beyond a four-person (350 kg) limit and the city’s control agency noted inspections were current.
