Pakistan’s Coordinated Polio Drive Enters Day Two With Millions Reached in Punjab

Recent polio detections have prompted a secure, closely monitored door-to-door push.

Overview

  • Punjab reported 5.2 million children vaccinated on the first day, including 287,000 in Lahore, 222,000 in Rawalpindi and 241,000 in Multan, as door-to-door work continued into day two.
  • Lahore’s campaign runs through October 19 with a target of more than 2.2 million children across 274 union councils, using digital tracking, door markings and on-ground supervision to verify coverage.
  • Sindh’s province-wide round, launched October 13, aims to reach over 10.6 million children with about 80,000 health workers and 21,000 security personnel, and includes Vitamin A supplementation.
  • Local operations expanded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Haripur targeting around 160,000 children over three days using 1,141 teams, and Mansehra deploying 1,993 police to protect four-day vaccination efforts.
  • Officials cited nine polio cases detected in Sindh this year and positive environmental samples as the rationale for intensified surveillance and partner support, with UNICEF, WHO, the Gates Foundation and Rotary engaged and a 1166 hotline available to report missed children.
