Pakistan Suspends Afghan Transit Trade From Karachi as Torkham, Chaman Close

Customs introduced stricter tracking requirements to manage congestion.

Overview

  • FBR’s Customs General Order No. 98/2025 halts Afghan Transit Trade transport from Karachi ports until further notice, cancels gate passes, and stops clearance at Karachi Port and Port Qasim.
  • Terminals were told to offload already loaded containers as Quetta and Peshawar customs depots reported no capacity, creating long queues at SAPT and leaving hundreds of trucks stranded.
  • Torkham and Chaman border crossings remain shut, with 107 vehicles stranded at Torkham and 357 at Chaman according to a customs notification.
  • Office Order 97/2025 requires Prime-over Devices and Container Surveillance Devices from licensed tracking firms before bonded vehicles may enter ports, with trip charges verified electronically.
  • Business groups report mounting losses and disruptions, including about Rs1 billion in daily losses, discounting of perishables, hardship for border workers, and a paused anti-polio drive, as a 48-hour ceasefire took effect on Oct 15.
