Pakistan Says Crew Safe After Israeli Strike on LPG Tanker in Houthi-Held Yemen

Officials credit regional coordination for securing the tanker’s departure.

Overview

  • An Israeli drone hit the vessel on Sept. 17 while it was docked at Ras Issa, a port under Houthi control in Yemen.
  • One LPG tank exploded and a fire broke out before the crew put it out, after which Houthi boats intercepted the ship and kept the sailors aboard.
  • The crew totaled 27 people: 24 Pakistanis led by Captain Mukhtar Akbar, two Sri Lankans, and one Nepali.
  • Pakistan’s Foreign Office and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi say the tanker has left Yemeni waters and all crew members are safe and in good health.
  • The ship had sailed from Iran’s Bandar Abbas carrying liquefied gas to Yemen, underscoring persistent risks to commercial shipping near Houthi-held ports.
