Pakistan Raids Alleged Placenta Processing Network, Five Held

Investigators say the seized material was being processed for export to supply cosmetic and injectable products.

Overview

  • Federal authorities carried out raids in Islamabad that led to the arrest of five suspects and the seizure of large quantities of placental material and processing equipment.
  • Investigators intercepted a consignment packed in about 30 cartons that they say weighed roughly 580 kilograms and was allegedly bound for Vietnam.
  • Officials reported finding fresh, dried and processed placenta at residential processing sites equipped with refrigerators and specialised cleaning and drying gear.
  • The Federal Investigation Agency has shortlisted about 200 hospitals across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Peshawar for records checks and is probing possible roles for hospital staff, waste contractors and customs officials.
  • A case was filed under the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Act, 2010, and authorities warned that forensic tests and further questioning will determine links to overseas buyers even as experts note weak clinical evidence for dramatic anti‑ageing effects from placental products.
