Overview

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva that Pakistan is meeting programme targets but needs the flood impact recognised in the next assessment.
• An IMF team will visit Islamabad from September 25 to October 8 for the second review of the Extended Fund Facility to determine release of a $1 billion tranche.
• The IMF chief expressed sympathy for those affected and said a credible damage assessment will guide recovery priorities while the Fund continues supporting reform efforts.
• Pakistan’s disaster agency reports more than 1,000 deaths since June 26 and over 2.5 million evacuations in Punjab and Sindh after record monsoon rains.
• Shehbaz also briefed World Bank President Ajay Banga on resource mobilisation, energy reforms, privatisation and climate resilience, and the government has sought IMF consent for temporary electricity bill relief in flood-hit areas.
