Overview
- Speaking in Islamabad at the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged Afghan authorities to take decisive steps against the TTP and other groups operating from Afghan soil.
- He said Pakistan would extend full cooperation once Kabul undertakes effective, verifiable measures, warning that support for the banned TTP will not deliver peace.
- Sharif framed a stable Afghanistan as essential for regional connectivity, growth and prosperity, stressing that extremist threats extend beyond Afghan borders.
- He recalled what he called unprovoked aggression on Pakistan’s eastern border in May and last month’s attacks on Pakistani posts from the Afghan side, saying the responses were firm and decisive.
- His remarks came after Pakistan–Afghanistan talks in Istanbul were suspended with no plan for a fourth round, as Turkey and Qatar continue efforts to facilitate dialogue.
