Pakistan Finance Chief Heads to Washington Seeking IMF Staff-Level Deal

Talks in Washington could clinch an IMF staff-level agreement to unlock funding under Pakistan's EFF-RSF programs.

Overview

  • Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb departed Saturday for a six-day visit to the IMF and World Bank annual meetings with the goal of finalising a staff-level agreement.
  • His schedule lists more than 65 engagements, including representation at plenary sessions and extensive policy, investor and media outreach.
  • Planned meetings include IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank President Ajay Banga, a MENAP keynote, an FBR digital transformation roundtable, and two World Economic Forum events.
  • Bilateral sessions are set with counterparts from China, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Azerbaijan, along with talks with senior White House, State, Treasury and DFC officials and members of Congress.
  • The push follows IMF review talks in Karachi and Islamabad led by Iva Petrova that ended without an announced agreement, as Aurangzeb courts rating agencies, banks and business groups while citing improved stability and recent Saudi engagement.
