Pakistan Faces Fresh Flood Risks After Monsoon Death Toll Reaches 299

In Gilgit-Baltistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled Rs 4 billion in relief funding following flood damage, warning of further monsoon downpours.

  • The NDMA reports that 299 people have died since late June in Pakistan’s monsoon floods and 715 others have been injured.
  • Floodwaters have damaged 1,676 homes (562 destroyed) and killed around 428 livestock, prompting the evacuation of 2,880 residents.
  • To date, authorities have distributed 13,466 relief items, including nearly 2,000 tents, more than 1,000 food packs and over 1,100 hygiene kits.
  • In Gilgit-Baltistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged Rs 4 billion in disaster relief and announced activation of a 100 MW solar project while directing the NDMA to map flood damages.
  • The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued warnings of more rain through August 7 with high risks of flash floods, landslides and glacial lake outburst in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.
