Overview

  • On May 30, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced Pakistan will elevate its chargé d’affaires in Kabul to a full ambassador for the first time since 2021.
  • The decision follows a trilateral meeting hosted by China in Beijing, where foreign ministers from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China broached upgrades in diplomatic ties.
  • Senior Taliban commander Saeedullah Saeed has publicly warned unauthorized militant factions against launching attacks into Pakistan, a move Islamabad and Beijing cite as evidence of Kabul’s security cooperation.
  • Afghan acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has accepted an invitation to visit Islamabad soon, marking the first high-level exchange between the two governments in two years.
  • Pakistan becomes the fourth country, after China, the UAE and Uzbekistan, to appoint an ambassador to Taliban-run Kabul, edging closer to diplomatic recognition despite ongoing international concerns over women’s rights.
