Pakistan Constitutes 12-Member Commission to Protect Journalists

The new body will begin implementing safeguards authorized by the 2021 statute.

Overview

  • The Information Ministry formally notified the Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals on Nov. 14 under Section 12 of the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021.
  • The CPJMP consists of 12 members, including ex-officio roles for the Principal Information Officer and the Ministry of Human Rights’ director general.
  • Membership includes representatives from the National Press Club, both PFUJ factions, and unions in Karachi, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
  • Named members include Ghulam Nabi Yousafzai, Nayyer Ali, Naveed Akbar Chaudhary, Afzal Butt, Hassan Abbas, Muhammad Nawaz Raza, Tahir Hassan Khan, Tamsela Chishti, Nadia Saboohi and Khalil Ahmed.
  • Officials say the commission will soon exercise its powers to monitor rights, oversee safety measures and support legal protections expanded by the Senate’s July amendment.
