Pakistan Braces for Western Disturbance Bringing Rain, Thunderstorms and Mountain Snow From Dec 20–22

Provincial agencies issue warnings with the system entering Balochistan today, spreading north this weekend.

Overview

  • PMD reports a strong westerly arriving in Balochistan on Dec 19 and moving into upper and central regions from Dec 20 to 22, bringing widespread rain, thunderstorms and snowfall.
  • Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir are set for the most significant snow, with moderate to heavy falls possible in areas including Swat, Kohistan, Hunza, Skardu and Neelum Valley.
  • Islamabad and Punjab are forecast rain from Dec 20–21, with Murree and Galiyat likely to see snowfall as PDMA warns of slippery conditions and possible road closures and urges tourists to avoid non‑essential travel.
  • Meteorological Centre Srinagar expects light to moderate snowfall over higher reaches and rain in the plains on Dec 20–21, with heavier snow possible on some higher reaches of Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal on Dec 21.
  • Karachi is expected to remain dry with cooler nights, while dense fog has already disrupted transport, including a closure on Motorway M5 and train delays.
