Pakistan Braces for Powerful Western Disturbance Bringing Widespread Rain and Mountain Snow

  • The PMD projects the system will enter western Pakistan on the night of Dec 29, intensify on Dec 30, spread into upper and central regions by Dec 31, and linger over northern areas until Jan 2.
  • Moderate to heavy snowfall is forecast for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit‑Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, with warnings of road closures, landslides and avalanches.
  • Karachi is likely to receive its first winter rain on the night of Dec 30, with the minimum temperature expected to drop to around 11°C. NDMA and provincial PDMAs have issued alerts, opened emergency control centers and urged tourists to avoid non‑essential travel to high‑altitude destinations; the KP PDMA helpline 1700 is active.
  • Light rain is expected in parts of Sindh and widespread rain or snow in Balochistan, Islamabad and Punjab’s hills, while fog in Punjab and upper Sindh is likely to ease during the wet spell.
