Pakistan Begins Targeted Polio Campaign

A new NEOC-confirmed wild polio case plus environmental sewage detections have driven an intensified vaccination and surveillance response.

Overview

  • The weeklong subnational campaign will run from Nov. 2 to Nov. 8 and will mobilize more than 200,000 frontline workers to vaccinate roughly 24 million children across 97 high-risk districts.
  • The National Emergency Operations Centre confirmed an eighth wild poliovirus case in Khyber District, a 13-month-old girl from Bara, reinforcing focused action in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where most cases have occurred.
  • Recent environmental sewage detections in Rawalpindi and a rise in positive samples in Sindh prompted local officials and UNICEF to approve extra vaccination rounds and stronger surveillance in affected areas.
  • Authorities are using detailed microplans, house-to-house teams, fixed sites and transit posts to reach mobile and migrant populations and to target neighbourhoods with high refusal or low coverage.
  • Government leaders say the campaign supports a goal to stop transmission by June 2027 while planning to shift vaccine financing and local manufacturing by 2030 to sustain long-term eradication efforts.
