Pakistan Begins Steps to Reopen Torkham Crossing After Weeklong Border Shutdown

The broader closure has stalled cross-border commerce, draining customs revenue.

Overview

  • Pakistan Customs ordered staff back to the Torkham terminal and moved a cargo scanner into place to restart goods clearance.
  • The crossing has been shut since Oct. 12 after a reported overnight exchange of fire on Oct. 11–12 that Pakistani security sources allege began with Afghan fire.
  • Afghan officials said hundreds of passengers have gathered near the frontier after hearing the gate could reopen.
  • Other gateways including Kharlachi, Ghulam Khan, Chaman and Angoor Adda remain closed, leaving thousands of trucks stranded and trade flows suspended.
  • Federal Board of Revenue data show the four main border points handle about $566.8 million in imports and $1.504 billion in exports annually, with customs officials citing daily losses of millions of rupees.
