Overview
- Senior officials from Pakistan and Russia met in Islamabad for the 12th round of their Joint Working Group on Countering International Terrorism and reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation.
- The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Dmitry Lyubinsky and the Pakistani delegation by Additional Foreign Secretary Khalid Jamali.
- Pakistan pressed for immediate, credible and verifiable action by Afghan authorities to stop terrorist groups using Afghan soil for planning, financing, or carrying out attacks.
- Both sides agreed to tighten intelligence sharing, expand coordination through multilateral bodies such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and to address threats using digital platforms and new financing methods.
- No operational steps were publicly announced at the meeting and the two sides set the next round of the working group to convene in Moscow next year, a sign of growing security ties since regional shifts after 2021.
