Pakistan and India Win Seats on UN Human Rights Council for 2026–28

The newly elected members will serve three-year terms beginning January 1, 2026.

  • The UN General Assembly elected 14 members: Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, India, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Viet Nam.
  • India secured a seat for 2026–28, which its UN envoy said will be the country’s seventh term on the Geneva-based body.
  • Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister called the result an overwhelming endorsement and pledged to pursue TRUCE principles—tolerance, respect, universality, consensus-building and engagement.
  • The Human Rights Council is a 47-member body with seats distributed by region, and members are chosen by the General Assembly for three-year terms.
