PAHO Strips Canada of Measles-Free Status, Costing the Americas Their Regional Certification

Health authorities cite more than a year of uninterrupted transmission, urging rapid vaccination to restore protection.

Overview

  • Canada has recorded roughly 5,100 to 5,200 measles cases in 2025 and two infant deaths from congenital infection, with most cases in Alberta and Ontario and in undervaccinated groups.
  • The PAHO Regional Verification Commission meeting in Mexico concluded Canada had uninterrupted transmission of the same strain for over 12 months, which triggered the regional loss of elimination status.
  • PAHO tallied 12,593 confirmed cases and 28 deaths across 10 countries as of Nov. 7, with about 95% of cases concentrated in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
  • Mexico continues an active outbreak with 5,185 cases and 23 deaths, while the United States has 1,681 cases across 44 outbreaks this year and could also lose its status if transmission is not halted.
  • Officials point to sub‑95% vaccination coverage and genetic links between chains in Canada, Texas and Chihuahua, and call for targeted campaigns, rapid contact vaccination within 48–72 hours, and stronger surveillance to reach 95% coverage.
