Overview

  • San Diego placed Merrill on the injured list with a left ankle sprain and bone bruise, a move announced shortly before Saturday’s game against the Dodgers.
  • The IL designation is retroactive to Aug. 20, and because he had already missed games, the backdating sets his earliest return for Aug. 30 against the Twins.
  • Merrill hurt the ankle slipping out of the batter’s box on Aug. 15, tried to play through it, and has not appeared since Aug. 17 as mobility and explosiveness remained limited.
  • Laureano has been handling center field in Merrill’s absence, with Gavin Sheets in left and Ryan O’Hearn rotating at first base and designated hitter.
  • This is Merrill’s third IL stint of 2025; he is batting .261 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs while the Padres navigate a tight NL West race.
