Pa. Troopers Stable After Susquehanna County Ambush, Suspect Killed

State police killed a 61-year-old man who opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle during a welfare check response.

Overview

  • On Aug. 7, Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins were ambushed on State Route 171 by Carmine Faino after he killed his neighbor.
  • Perechinsky applied a tourniquet to Jenkins’s arm and ordered a passing tractor-trailer to block the road to shield arriving responders.
  • State police, backed by local units and the Special Emergency Response Team, set a perimeter, attempted negotiations and ultimately used lethal force after Faino downed a police drone and continued firing.
  • Both troopers were airlifted to nearby hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition, with officials confirming there is no further public threat.
  • Governor Josh Shapiro visited the scene and hospitals to support the officers as investigators continue probing Faino’s motives and tactics.
