Overview
- OXIO CEO Nicolás Girard, who spoke Thursday at the M360 LATAM event, said the consortium expects regulator sign-off in four to six months.
- The April agreement, valued at about $450 million, covers all shares of Pegaso and Celular de Telefonía that operate Movistar in Mexico and now faces a CNA competition review.
- OXIO says Movistar will keep its name and current managers, and it will shift the business to its cloud Telecom-as-a-Service platform to run the carrier as a natively digital operation.
- The company will keep Movistar’s wholesale deal with AT&T through 2030 to use its 5G network, following Telefónica’s 2020–2022 move to carry service on AT&T after leaving its own towers and spectrum.
- OXIO also plans to add satellite links to push near-total coverage, a change that could matter for roughly 21 million mobile users and about 1.3 million IoT connections in Mexico.
