Oxfordshire Officials Back Temporary £5 Congestion Charge on Six Oxford Roads

Officials say the move targets congestion linked to the Botley Road closure.

Overview

  • Oxfordshire County Council officers have recommended the plan, with a cabinet decision scheduled for September 10 and an estimated £3.2 million net over 10 months if implemented.
  • The scheme would be enforced by automatic number plate recognition cameras and would apply to car drivers only.
  • The charging points are proposed for Hythe Bridge Street, St Cross Road, St Clement's Street, Thames Street, Marston Ferry Road and Hollow Way.
  • Provisions include free travel permits for residents (100 for city residents and 25 for other county residents), permits for carers and traders, and blue badge holders being able to designate two exempt vehicles.
  • Consultation results showed about 74% of 7,165 respondents expected negative impacts, with opposition from businesses, schools and volunteer rescue groups over access, staffing and cost concerns.
