Overview

  • The six-week consultation began on June 23 and seeks views on a £5 daily fee for cars entering designated central streets between 7am and 7pm.
  • If approved in September, the charge would run from autumn 2025 until Botley Road reopens and a traffic filtering trial starts in August 2026.
  • Any surplus revenue after covering setup and running costs will fund discounted park-and-ride services and enhanced bus routes.
  • Permits will be available for residents, Blue Badge holders, frequent hospital patients, taxis and private hire vehicles, and electric cars will not be exempt.
  • Over 9,000 people have signed a petition opposing the plan, and the AA has demanded guarantees the scheme will end after two years.
