Oxford University Press India Apologizes for Unverified Claims in 2003 Shivaji Book

A Bombay High Court directive prompted the apology that resulted in the quashing of criminal defamation proceedings.

Overview

  • In a public notice published Tuesday, the publisher acknowledged that statements on pages 31, 33, 34, and 93 were not verified.
  • The apology was addressed to MP Udayanraje Bhosale, a 13th-generation descendant of Shivaji, and to the public at large.
  • The notice was issued on behalf of former OUP India managing director Sayeed Manzar Khan.
  • The Bombay High Court’s Kolhapur bench accepted the publisher’s commitment to a nationwide apology on December 17 and set aside the magisterial case from 2005.
  • OUP India said the book was withdrawn from circulation more than two decades ago and pledged to weigh cultural sensitivities in future publications.
