Oxford Street to Go Car-Free on Sunday for One-Day Trial of Pedestrian Plan

City Hall stages the showcase to build backing for a near-mile pedestrian zone pending detailed traffic proposals.

Overview

  • Vehicles will be banned between Oxford Circus and Orchard Street from noon to 8pm on Sunday during the This Is Oxford Street event.
  • Buses are set to divert from 9pm on Saturday until 4am on Monday as the trial closes a central stretch to traffic.
  • The mayor’s longer-term proposal would pedestrianise nearly a mile from Orchard Street near Marble Arch to Great Portland Street near Oxford Circus.
  • City Hall estimates costs at around £150 million with expected private contributions and is seeking Government approval for a Mayoral Development Corporation.
  • A consultation reported roughly two-thirds support out of about 6,000 respondents, though residents and traders continue to raise concerns over rerouted buses and spillover traffic, as Camden and Westminster leaders signal cooperation.
