Oxford Street To Go Car-Free for One Day on Sept. 21 in Mayor’s Pedestrianisation Showcase

City Hall will use the traffic-free showcase to build backing for a wider pedestrianisation plan now being readied for consultation.

Overview

  • The “This is Oxford Street” event will close the street from Orchard Street to Oxford Circus on Sunday, September 21, from 12pm to 8pm.
  • Transport for London will divert many bus routes from late on Saturday night, September 20, until early Monday morning to accommodate the closure.
  • The day will feature themed zones covering style, play, flavour, sound, history, future and self-expression, with a wellness area by Holland & Barrett and a Choose Love installation.
  • City Hall frames the event as a live test for proposed permanent pedestrianisation targeted around 2027, with detailed plans due to go to public consultation later this year.
  • The mayor cites Oxford Street’s economic weight and post-pandemic challenges, notes prior consultation support of roughly two-thirds, and points to retailer and business group backing.
