Oxford Street Shuts to Traffic for One-Day Trial as TfL Takes Charge

The car-free showcase tests the proposal as a public trial of Sadiq Khan’s plan to pedestrianise the West End’s flagship shopping street.

Overview

  • Vehicles are banned from Oxford Circus to Orchard Street from noon to 8pm for the 'This Is Oxford Street' event featuring music, art, food and retailer activations.
  • Transport for London has assumed responsibility for the central stretch of Oxford Street from Westminster City Council, a step toward delivering permanent pedestrianisation.
  • TfL issued travel advice and temporary bus diversions, with reroutes in place from 9pm Saturday until 4am Monday to manage the closure.
  • City Hall says roughly two-thirds of consultation respondents support pedestrianisation, and the broader scheme is estimated at about £150 million with some private funding.
  • Detailed traffic and bus rerouting proposals will be consulted on later this year, with a Mayoral Development Corporation targeted for early 2026 and a contested path to permanent changes around 2027.
