Oxford Street Goes Car‑Free on Sunday for Pedestrianisation Showcase

The event previews a wider scheme pending government sign‑off for new planning powers.

Overview

  • Traffic will be barred from Oxford Circus to Orchard Street from noon to 8pm on Sunday, September 21, to demonstrate how a pedestrianised Oxford Street could work.
  • TfL bus diversions run from 9pm Saturday until 4am Monday, with routes using Wigmore Street and Henrietta Place and some services terminating early, including route 73 at Tottenham Court Road and routes 7, N7 and N137 at Marble Arch.
  • The free "This is Oxford Street" programme features themed zones with live music, art installations, food and drink stalls, and retailer activations from brands such as John Lewis, Schuh, Holland & Barrett, Topshop and charity Choose Love.
  • Mayor Sadiq Khan’s broader plan would restrict vehicles along roughly 0.7 miles to Marble Arch, carries an estimated cost of about £150 million with private contributions, and requires approval to set up a Mayoral Development Corporation before detailed consultations later this year.
  • Business groups and retail experts back the proposal as a way to lift footfall, while residents and some local politicians object over access and traffic displacement, with concerns raised about rerouting up to 35 bus routes; a City Hall consultation reported about two‑thirds support.
