Owners Push Back on Rodgers’s Call for a Single ‘International Week’

CBA language bars an all-international extra week, requiring any structural change to be negotiated with the players union.

Overview

  • Aaron Rodgers said recently that the NFL could stage every overseas game in one dedicated week with an extra bye, a proposal he raised after Pittsburgh’s trip to Paris.
  • League executives and team owners told reporters they have virtually no support for that plan and said the idea was not part of formal 2020 CBA bargaining.
  • The 2020 collective bargaining agreement explicitly says the extra week in a 17-game season ‘‘shall not consist entirely of international games,’’ which blocks a unilateral move to an international week.
  • The NFL is expanding its overseas footprint now, with a record nine international games in 2026 and an owners’ resolution allowing up to 10 league-operated international contests next season.
  • Players and the NFLPA have pressed for travel protections and scheduling concessions after international trips, and any bigger change such as 16 annual international games or an 18-game season would require fresh talks with the players union.
