Owners Begin On-Site Inspections After 274 Cars Flooded in Yokkaichi Underground Garage

Owners have a three-day access window through Sept. 24, with extraction plans unresolved due to tight access for tow trucks.

Overview

  • A record downpour on Sept. 12 flooded Kusunoki Parking’s B1 and B2 levels near Kintetsu Yokkaichi Station, submerging 160 cars on B1 and 114 on B2.
  • Drainage was completed on Sept. 17, yet there is still no timetable to remove vehicles because large wreckers cannot enter the underground facility.
  • During Sept. 22 checks, owners found mud and mold inside cars, broken window glass, and smart keys that no longer unlock doors.
  • The city and the parking operator are allowing controlled entry from Sept. 22 to 24 for owners to confirm damage and retrieve documents and valuables.
  • Yokkaichi City set up a recovery-support team on Sept. 15, and as of Sept. 21 the owners of 20 damaged vehicles had not been identified.
