Overnight 19th Street Bridge Demolition to Shut I-83 in Harrisburg This Weekend

The closure is part of PennDOT’s East Shore Section 3 rebuild of the Capital Beltway.

Overview

  • Lane restrictions begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, with all I-83 lanes closing around 11 p.m. and reopening expected by about 8 a.m. Sunday after demolition and cleanup.
  • PennDOT’s signed detours send northbound drivers via Exit 42 to Second Street, Paxton Street and Eisenhower Boulevard, and southbound drivers via Exit 45 to Paxton Street, 17th Street and the ramp to I-83.
  • 19th Street remains closed through 2026, with related ramps projected to reopen in spring 2027, according to PennDOT.
  • Separately, the right lane and shoulder on southbound I-83 over the John Harris Memorial Bridge are closed for several weeks for emergency steel repairs.
  • The demolition falls under East Shore Section 3 contracts led by New Enterprise Stone and Lime, with Newville Construction Services handling the blast and J. D. Eckman engaged on additional work through 2033.
