Overloaded Mango Truck Rollover in Andhra Pradesh Kills Nine Labourers

A negligence probe under the Motor Vehicles Act reflects state authorities' response to calls for tighter transport safety after the crash.

Overview

  • The crash occurred late on July 13 when a mango-laden truck carrying over 40 tonnes of fruit and about two dozen farm workers lost control on a hairpin bend in Pullampeta mandal and overturned on a lake bund.
  • Police have attributed the accident to excessive cargo weight combined with driver overspeeding, which caused the vehicle to tip and crush labourers who were seated atop the mango load.
  • Rescue teams completed recovery operations by early July 14 and treated injured workers at Rajampet Government Hospital before referring critically hurt cases to RIMS Kadapa.
  • Annamayya district police registered a negligence case under the Motor Vehicles Act and appointed Superintendent of Police V Vidyasagar Naidu to oversee the ongoing investigation into the crash.
  • Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu pledged full support for the victims’ families and directed officials to provide compensation, ensure quality medical care and review rural transport safety protocols.
