Over 60,000 Biometric Gun Safes Recalled after Reports of Unauthorized Access and Child Death

Flawed programming leaves biometric safes in default-to-open mode, leading to the recall of over 60,000 products made by Illinois-based Fortress Safe. The products were sold under various brand names including Fortress, Cabela's, Gettysburg, and Legend Range & Field at major retailers and online platforms between January 2019 and October 2023.

  • Fortress Safe, an Illinois-based company, has voluntarily recalled over 60,000 biometric gun safes due to programming flaws that may allow unauthorized access to the safes.
  • Sold under various brand names, these safes were available at major retailers and online platforms between January 2019 and October 2023.
  • According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there has been a reported case of a 12-year-old boy dying due to a firearm obtained from one of these faulty safes.
  • So far, 39 incidents have been reported where the safes were accessed by unauthorized fingerprints.
  • Consumers are advised to stop using the safes' biometric feature, remove the batteries, and use the key for the recalled safes. A free replacement safe is being offered by Fortress Safe.
