Over 50 pilot whales dead after mass stranding off Scottish coast

  • Over 50 pilot whales washed ashore on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, resulting in a mass death event.
  • Initially 55 whales were reported stranded, but only around 15 were still alive when rescuers arrived.
  • Attempts were made to refloat some of the whales, but ultimately all except one perished.
  • The cause of the stranding is still under investigation, but birthing complications may have led the pod to follow a female onto shore.
  • This incident is considered to be the largest mass whale stranding in Scotland in recent decades.
