Over 40 Missing After Avalanche in India's Himalaya Region

A massive avalanche in Uttarakhand has buried dozens, with rescue operations hampered by severe weather conditions.

  • The avalanche struck near the village of Mana in Uttarakhand, close to the border with Tibet, burying 57 people in snow and debris.
  • At least 41 individuals, primarily construction workers, remain missing, while 16 have been rescued so far, including three hospitalized in a military facility.
  • Rescue efforts are being led by the National Disaster Response Force, with support from the military, but are hindered by heavy snowfall and strong winds.
  • Authorities believe the avalanche may have been triggered by a glacier or ice break in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.
  • The Himalayas, increasingly vulnerable to climate change, have seen similar disasters in recent years, including a fatal avalanche in 2022 that killed 27 mountaineering students.
