Overview

  • The Terrorism Act proscription took effect at midnight on July 5, making any membership or support for Palestine Action punishable by up to 14 years in prison
  • Metropolitan Police warned that chanting, wearing supportive clothing or displaying signs for the group is a criminal offence and officers would act on any breach
  • More than 20 people were arrested in Parliament Square after holding placards reading “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action” in a Defend Our Juries–organised sit-in
  • Co-founder Huda Ammori’s attempts to delay or block the ban in the High Court and Court of Appeal were refused less than two hours before the order came into force
  • Palestine Action members have vowed to continue non-violent direct action and to make the proscription unenforceable, framing the ban as a threat to democratic protest
